George RR Martin has supposedly joined forces with Dark Souls developer FromSoftware for a Norse inspired Soulslike game, which could be shown at E3.
George RR Martin, writer of the incredibly popular A Song of Ice and Fire book series, wrote on his Blog Monday evening that he had been consulting on a video game out of Japan.
It seems that this game will be developed by the team at From Software, who are well known for creating the ever popular Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice games.
A person familiar with From Software contacted the gaming news outlet Gematsu with information about the game, which is known internally by the moniker Great Rune.
Gematsu go on to say that their source told them the game has been in development for the past three years. It is an open world title, which features horse riding, and will be a collaboration between Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin which will eventually be published by Bandai Namco.
Gematsu’s source also stated that we would not have long to wait for more news about this upcoming title, as it would be revealed officially at Microsoft’s upcoming E3 2019 press conference.
This all supports a separate anonymous leak which arose on the /V/ 4chan message board some four hours before George RR Martin’s blog post statement on Monday.
This separate leak claims that the game is called Project Rune within the studio. It will supposedly be themed after Norse mythology, including Frost Giants, Draugr and Nekken’s.
This leak claims that the game is the spiritual successor to Dark Souls, but does have a slew of drastic changes to the franchise formula. It will not be developed primarily by the creator of Dark Souls, Miyazaki, but instead by Yui Tanimura, the director of Dark Souls 2 and co-director of Dark Souls 3.
In this game, the leak says, we will play as one of three unique characters, a hunter with a longbow, a warrior with a great shield and a giant club, and a wizard who can cast magic from a magic book. The game will supposedly change drastically depending on which character you play, featuring different unique enemies and locations.
As with the Souls series you will be able to invade the worlds of other players, either to cooperate with one another or to fight it out, the host can activate this process with a summoning stone.
The game will supposedly take place in a kingdom in the midst of a 100 year long civil war. The main characters are a fellowship of knights that serve directly under the king, and will start with your companions missing in action after searching for an artifact to give them an upper hand in the wars to come.
The leak also states that the game will be shown at E3 with a cinematic trailer, featuring no gameplay, and that it will be available on multiple platforms.
The Gematsu leak holds much more weight than the 4Chan leak, though the two do share some surprising similarities. As with all leaks they should be taken with a pinch of salt, though with E3 just around the corner we won’t have long to wait until we find out the truth behind this potential From Software George RR Martin collaboration.
