CCP Games shocked the VR industry back in 2017 when it announced that it was closing its Atlanta development studio that focused solely on VR, as well as selling off its other VR studio in Newcastle, UK. Miraculously, the game got a monumental update today featuring a load of new features and changes. CCP Games described this in a Press Release as the games’ “first major update”, implying that there is more to come. Here are some of the new features in the ‘Championship Update’:

• Quick Play – This is the fastest way to get into the action with other players. Select the desired game mode (Basic or Advanced) and join through Quick Play, Public Custom Game or Create Your Own Game (to which other Quick Play players can join).

• Custom Games – Browse a list of available games or choose to create a custom game with the desired game mode and privacy settings. Optional password settings are provided for both players and spectators.

• Ranked – Compete in a cross-platform competitive mode using the Advanced rules. Players remain unranked until they have completed their first 10 matches, after which their recent record determines their tier (Legend, Diamond, Gold, Silver, Bronze) and position (1-100) within that tier.

The amazing part about all of this is now there’s more Cross-Play modes across all platforms the game is on. Also, spectators will no longer take up a player spot, so you can enjoy watching all you please. It’s ultimately strange, it seems Sparc has enough manpower to make this publisher see that there’s something to invest in. Hopefully they move back into VR development fully and not just updating Sparc.

Sparc’s Championship Update is out now on PS VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and the Valve Index. The game is $19.99 across the board.
