2010s is easily the best decade in gaming history. We saw the closure of the 7th generation with insane bangers like Batman: Arkham City, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Journey, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim… that’s just the tip of the iceberg of insane games from 2010-2013 alone.
While other decades have had stuff like the introduction of online gaming, 3D visuals, and countless other boundary breaking initiatives, 2010s now have a ton of improvements that top it over the rest.
VR for example. Astro Bot Rescue Mission is quite literally my favorite game of all time by miles, it really isn’t funny. Beat Saber is my go to workout game and guess what, it’s so fun I don’t want to stop. Even the initial game I played in VR, my mind was completely blown away at everything on my displays.
VR wasn’t the only thing that made the decade so perfect. PS4 and Wii U also played a massive part in it for me. The amount of games Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Worldwide Studios pumped out that were beyond perfection is unparalleled. God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and especially Concrete Genie. Other generations, even the 7th generation with the slew of 10/10 titles, it isn’t even comparable. PS4 Pro with 4K HDR gaming also opened up my eyes to something I didn’t think I needed in my life. Oh my God, loading up my first game in 4K HDR (Horizon: Zero Dawn by the way), my entire mind was blown to a trillion pieces.
Frankly, I don’t give a single fuck what anyone says, PlayStation Vita is the best handheld console of all time. Sony blessed the gaming world with a console that had some of the best games ever on it like Persona 4 Golden, Gravity Rush, and especially Freedom Wars. 3G connectivity to play on the go was the coolest technology at the time, it really was game anywhere you want and 5G tech should come to Nintendo Switch hands down.
The Wii U was probably even more underrated than the PS Vita. The tablet brought a new, innovative way to play that most people don’t pay attention to. Super Mario Maker for example, it makes creating levels extremely easy, hell, tons of other games took advantage of that gamepad that made gameplay even more interesting. The suspense of Zombi U where you had to look down at your display while zombies could get you always added a new level of spook that other consoles or PC versions couldn’t do for me.
Speaking of which, the Nintendo Switch knocked the socks off of everyone. Mario Odyssey, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Astral Chain, the list goes on and on and on and on. Copying the PSP Go’s concept of becoming a hybrid is excellent, God being able to take your games on the go or come home and play them on the big screen is just astonishing.
Incredible but not going into detail: The entire 3D gaming phase, Sony’s E3/PSX winning streak from 2015-2017, Nintendo’s unbelievable comeback from the Wii U, countless juggernaut titles, the 3DS.
Overall, just to me at least, there’s so much right about this decade that it’s impossible in my eyes that any other decade could surpass this one so far. Sure, things like Xbox One as well as the insane list of canceled game are downsides, the good absolutely outweighs the bad by lightyears.
