Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Sucker Punch Productions ended the Sly Cooper franchises by themselves after the release of Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves in 2005 to begin work on inFamous.

Overtime, Sly Cooper’s future seemed unlikely until it was announced in 2011 that the series would return under Sanzaru Games and that the new entry would be coming to PS3 and PS Vita. It was awesome, and the game came out in 2013 to a pretty mediocre acclaim and sales. It was ashame, since so many gamers wanted this series back.

Flash forward to 2019, we haven’t heard a single peep about where the franchise will go. The movie announced in 2014 has been canceled and made into a TV show that was aimed to release earlier this year but never came to be. So even that spelled the doom for our favorite thief. Sanzaru has said in the past that they’d like to go back and finish the story since it was left on a cliffhanger but they would need Sony’s approval first.

And now here we are at the tail end of 2019 and Sanzaru Games’ Mat Kraemer (Lead Designer on Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time) has appeared on Kinda Funny Games Daily, and he talked a little bit about what’s going on with our raccoon, hippo, and turtle buddies.

First off, Egypt was meant as a script for Sly Cooper “4”, but the game never seemingly game to be. After that, Sanzaru Games thought they’d make it as DLC instead for 2013’s Thieves in Time, but again, it didn’t happen. While we don’t know the exact specifics why, we can only speculate that Sony Interactive Entertainment wasn’t happy with the reception of Sanzaru’s previous outing so they didn’t greenlight another title. Kraemer also confirmed that the script for that episode is already complete and has been for a while.

We love Sly. I’ll tell you a tidbit of information. The original first episode of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time was suppose to be Egypt in Sly Tutankhamen and Egypt was going to be a DLC episode. That was the intention and we never got to finish that out. I do [and the team] at Sanzaru have the story and the whole episode done on paper form.

We would love to come back to that world. I hate leaving him there and it’s the question we get the most. So all I can is that if you guys want more Sly Cooper let Sony know. We are always ready to dig into that and it was a great franchise to work on. It was a great project.

So, that leaves it up to Sony to greenlight a new title. We don’t know if we’ll ever see another entry in Sony’s stealth IP but it would be absolutely incredible if we could see Sly and the gang once again.
