A massive downfall to Microsoft’s strategy of having Xbox Game Studios make cross-generation titles is games will be held back by Xbox One, Digital Foundry’s John Linneman explains.

He notes that while Xbox Series X is extremely powerful, Xbox One’s brutally weak CPU will absolutely hold back any real “next generation” development. This comes down to things like world size, AI, particles, and various other things not being fully stretched on newer hardware as there aren’t multiple teams doing the ports, just a single group in each studio.

This approach isn’t what Sony is taking, most Worldwide Studios will be making PS5 only games and there won’t be many, if any, cross-gen projects.
